After completing my engineering and MBA from Toronto, Canada, I moved to India and started an ecommerce business. Here are a few lessons I learned as an entrepreneur.
Lesson no. 1: Entrepreneurship is not glorious!
If you are using a label of being an “Entrepreneur” because it sounds cool and think that you will get rich and famous overnight as they show in the movies and TV shows, let’s just say the image of the “good life” of your dreams is far from the truth. A fancy logo, a sharp business card and a hip website are not the only requirements to become a successful entrepreneur. I personally believe that if you are not willing to commit at least 5 years of your life behind a single idea that you are truly passionate about, don’t waste your time being an entrepreneur.
The drive has to come from deep within. And it has got to be something more than just money, fame or power that motivates you to wake up early in the morning every day and work hard till late every night. Because at the end of the day, when no one is watching, you will be the one sitting behind your computer at 2:00 am trying to single-handedly manage your start up’s finance, strategy, marketing, operations, sales and much more. If you started with a short term vision of becoming successful overnight, you will most likely lose momentum when things get overwhelming.
Remember to stay motivated after each defeat and be humble after each victory and sooner or later you will definitely be successful.
